About Looking for Words

Hello and welcome to Looking for Words. This is a website devoted to books, writers, the media and words. You will find links to and excerpts from other websites. You could also call it a personal online dictionary. I will be posting words and phrases  that I come across online on Looking for Words’ companion blog, Meaningful.

Yes, you could also find them on free online dictionaries. So why am I posting them here on Meaningful? Because not of all of them are likely to be found on the same websites.

I will be posting new words, rarely used words as well as those we use every day and their synonyms wherever possible. I may post a word and add more meanings and synonyms later. That is why the entries will appear in the form of a blog. I can edit the entries later, and if a word has appeared on this site, it should show up in the search box.

There are times when I come across a word and don’t get to use it. I mean, how often do you use words like charivari, defenestrate and gallimaufry? Maybe if I post them on Meaningful, I will be able to recall them later. Of course, I could jot them down in a notebook. But I love blogs and have heard so much about WordPress that I had to try it myself.

I will be looking up grammar and usage too — for my own edification. I am not a native English speaker, but I love the language.

So help me brush up my English. Please suggest any words and phrases you would like to see here and how to improve this site.  And don’t hesitate to point out my mistakes. I will be grateful.  So do send in your comments. I would love to hear from you. And if you blog about language, please let me know. I would like to visit your website. Thank you.
